“Yes, breathing allows us to hack into our own nervous system, control our immune systems, and restore our health.  Yes, changing how you breathe will help you live longer”

DR. THEODORE BELFOR

D.D.S

Dr. Theodore R. Belfor is a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry, and a Senior Certified Instructor for the International Association for Orthodontics (IAO)

In the 1960s, Dr. Belfor was sent to Vietnam to work as the sole brigade dentist for 4,000 soldiers of the 196th Light Infantry.  From the jungles of Vietnam to Park Ave in Manhattan, upon his return, he opened his own private dental office in New York City and has been in private practice for more than 40 years.

Since 2001, Dr. Belfor has specialized in his patient evaluation system for diagnosis and treatment with the Homeoblock™ protocol. The Homeoblock™ protocol is designed to treat facial aging and improve breathing by generating proper swallowing, tongue posture and positional changes of the bones of the cranial facial system.

Nature wants symmetry and balance. Do you notice your facial features are out of balance?

Is one eye lower than the other? Is one ear lower than the other? Does the corner of your mouth turn down on one side?

Chances are you will notice which side of your face is underdeveloped and aging more rapidly.

It is a fascinating fact that our face and cranium actually grow and develop around soft tissue. The cranium grows around the brain, the orbit of the eye grows around the soft tissue of the eye and our face grows around our breathing tube, the pharynx. Our growth is also influenced by the tongue’s placement.

All these factors have a crucial influence on the development and health of our bodies.

  • When we breathe through our nose correctly the positive pressure of the air develops our breathing tube, the pharynx, and our face.
  • When we swallow correctly with the tongue up against the palate our faces have a greater possibility to develop to their full potential.
  • When we chew hard food like the primitive man did the bone structure of the face has a better chance to develop to its genetic potential.

Dr. Belfor’s Main Focuses for Patients:

  • Generating proper breathing
  • Tongue placement and chewing for better health.

What areas we can help:

  • Sleep and breathing disorders
  • Jaw joint dysfunction (TMD)
  • Headache
  • Teeth clenching and grinding (Bruxism)
  • Upper airway resistance.
  • Sleep onset insomnia.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Lack of Alpha/Delta sleep
  • Mild sleep apnea
  • Premature aging

The Homeoblock™ appliance is a revolutionary patented oral device that is much like a retainer in looks, but the results go way beyond teeth straightening.

  • Generates a size and shape change in the maxilla and mandible
  • Stimulates the cranial sutures for new bone growth and sutural homeostasis
  • Signals the periodontal ligament and generates an epigenetic response for maxillary growth and facial symmetry
  • Creates space for teeth straightening
  • Promotes proper swallowing and proper tongue posture
  • Tones the pharyngeal airway and reduces inflammation
  • Opens the ostia to allow the nitric oxide to reach the back of the nose
  • Discludes the mandible and allows the jaw to come downward and forward

The POD® is a custom fit, laboratory fabricated intraoral mandibular splint designed to aid in treating bruxism and TMJ Dysfunction. Worn during sleep, the device serves to protect the teeth and restorations from the destructive forces of bruxism and will help to alleviate TMJ/TMD, headaches, and facial muscle pain. The unique design increases anterior tongue space while limiting the amount of occlusal contact points with the maxillary arch. Limiting occlusal contacts allows for a reduction of trigeminally innervated muscular activity and can reduce muscle tension and help alleviate associated TMJ pain symptoms and headaches. The POD® is:

  • Custom made for you, for a precise fit.
  • Made from high quality, biocompatible materials, with a one year warranty.
  • Allows full range of mouth movement–you can open and close your mouth, as well as talk, drink water and yawn while wearing the splint.

16 months later we have more level eyes, more prominent cheekbones and reduced nasolabial depression.

Before and After Treatment with the Homeoblock™

The Green indicated that the mandible repositioned downward, forward and to the right side. This allows the tongue to come forward and provides better airway space behind the tongue. Also shown are changes in the greater wings of the sphenoid bone. The teeth also moved outward for a wider smile. Click here to view more.

After 24 months – More level eyes, higher and wider cheekbones, stronger jaw and improved facial symmetry

The Green shows the jaw moves downward and to the left. The upper jaw has remodeled larger and the cheekbones on the right side are higher and wider. Click here to view more.

REVIEWS

“A number of years ago, after seeing Dr. Belfor’s presentation on Homeoblock treatment to develop the faces and airways of adults, I realized that I had suffered from dysfunctional mouth breathing my entire life up that point. I’d had a lifetime of near-fatal chronic inflammatory diseases.  I decided to treat myself, at age 69, with Homeoblocks, mouth tape, and self-regulated nasodiaphragmatic breathing and postural changes. After 18 months, the results were shockingly wonderful. I’d lost about 50 pounds without dieting after a lifetime fighting obesity, the symptoms of my Crohn’s Disease and skin problems vastly diminished, and my antihypertensive meds were cut in less than half.  The complete story of those changes can be seen in an 18-minute YouTube video of a presentation on my case I was asked to give in 2016 at the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, of which I am a past president.

Since that time we have had similar success with adult patients over the age of 60 with Homeoblocks, and now use the Preventive Oral Device (POD) as our initial device, rather than mandibular advancement devices which can produce unfortunate occlusal changes, in our efforts to help our patients move from sickness to wellness through self-regulated breathing.

I strongly recommend the upcoming October course for anyone wishing to move beyond conventional “airway management strategies” toward effecting a cure for their patients, their families, and themselves.”

“Dr. Theodore Belfor is a leader in the field of facial development, sleep disorders, and the role of functional dentistry to correct growth and breathing issues. His research and system to understand the airway and apply imaging based treatments plans should be understood by every dental and sleep physician. I highly recommend his course as a practitioner and as a patient to address sleep disorders, retractive orthodontic work, and TMD.”

”I do believe that the Uniblock device has not only changed my life but will prolong it. I came to Dr. Belfor as a 59-year-old physician, exhausted from a lifetime of impaired sleep and with some long term effects of sleep apnea including hypertension for several decades and weight gain. With four months of Uniblock therapy, I was breathing better and sleeping better, no longer snoring. On a weekend away, I went swimming for the first time since beginning the treatment. I have always loved swimming (and in fact, I am a U.S. Swim Official), but I could not swim competitively or pass the lifeguard test because of breathing limitations. I could do a maximum of three strokes per breath doing freestyle. I would have panicked had I been forced to do more. That weekend, I found that I could swim five strokes per breath with ease! A forty percent improvement. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Belfor did an overnight oximetry test and found that I’d had only one apneic event over the entire night. I notice that I can swallow pills with much more ease. I no longer worry about keeping family members awake with snoring.”

“I first met Ted Belfor In 2009 and he introduced me to a revolutionary idea. The concept that the dentist can play a role in facial anti-aging and airway development. He had developed a functional orthopedic/orthodontic appliance that stimulated growth in the maxilla, mandible and pharyngeal airway. I have been using the appliance which functions as the best of all possible orthodontic retainers.”
